Back-to-school blues? Try this!

“But I’m too tired!”

It’s that time of year again …. school is back in session and afterschool activities abound, meaning “I’m too tired” can become a frequent refrain from the backseat of your car.

It’s not uncommon for us dance teachers to hear about students who fall asleep on the way to class during these first few weeks of the year.  Other students won’t be shy about stating how tired they are, or they might just feel a little grouchy by the time dance class rolls around.

So what can you do to help turn this feeling around?  In our experience, a little help from mom or dad goes a LONG way to helping ease this transition!  We recommend:

  • Creating a fun going-to-dance ritual.  Whether it’s the music you jam out to on the way to class each week, or a family pizza night afterward, a special ritual can always perk up the day.
  • Offering gentle, consistent reassurance.  While logic doesn’t always fly with children, sometimes they feel better just knowing you understand and are there for them.
  • Having plenty of water and snacks after school!  Dancers who are well-hydrated and who’ve had a light, healthy snack before dance class usually have the brainpower and energy they need to enjoy their dance experience.

Persevering through this often tiring time of year is a great life lesson in not giving up, one that can’t be underestimated.  Parents, we appreciate ALL you do to help make dance class a positive, fun part of your child’s weekly routine!
